Beyond the Spots: Meet the Black Jaguar
Juliana Coin | 04/06/2026
The Pantanal is one of the world’s most vibrant biomes, teeming with a breathtaking array of flora and fauna. Yet, did you know that Brazilian nature can be even more awe-inspiring than you can imagine?
In this article, you will discover more about the jaguar and the black jaguar: two facets of one of Latin America’s most magnificent creatures.
The Genetics Behind the Great Cats
In Brazil, the iconic jaguar is not the only one of its kind. The black jaguar, which belongs to the same species, possesses distinct characteristics — most notably a dark coat resulting from a genetic mutation known as melanism.
However, the classic rosettes of the jaguar don’t vanish; they remain hidden within the dark pigment, revealing themselves only when touched by the golden rays of the sun.
While melanistic individuals are more commonly found in dense forests like the Amazon, the black jaguar can also be encountered in the Pantanal, albeit more rarely. This occurs because the Pantanal’s environment tends to be more open with stronger solar radiation, favoring the classic yellowish pattern for the jaguar’s survival — specifically for effective camouflage during the hunt and for thermal regulation.
