Lose yourself in the Brazilian Pantanal
A well-kept secret of wildlife lovers and nature photographers around the world, the Pantanal shines as Brazil’s best region for animal watching. Because of its rich geography, the world’s most extensive floodplain has an incredible quantity of birds, reptiles, and big mammals. It’s a seasonal wetland that spends part of the year underwater, and all its natural species are adapted to this reality. For photographers and those looking to get really close to animals that exist only in one of the last large untouched natural reserves on Earth, the dry season is paradise.
From May to October, immense bird flocks come in search of fish, as some 200 species reside in the temporary lagoons and oxbow lakes. These birds include roseate spoonbills, wood storks, and jabirus. Caimans and capybara, in turn, are drawn to the water by the birds. And at the top of this food chain is the much sought-after jaguar.
This abundance of food and diversity is particularly evident in the Northern Pantanal, homeland of the jaguar – known here as the onça-pintada – the largest and most elusive feline in the Americas. Also, the giant otters, neotropical otters, greater rhea, and other species aren’t scared off by human presence. Also, the fact that there are no hills in these open plains makes the scenery even better for spotting wildlife. During the dry season, there is the bonus of the beautiful ipê trees in bloom. Those interested in cultural differences get to observe the daily lives of the “pantaneiros,” local cowboys who engage in a seasonal work-life herding cattle in the wetlands.

Itinerary
Everything you can expect, day by day.
Day 1 | Cuiabá
Arrival at Cuiabá airport (CGB). Transfer to the hotel, check-in, and overnight. Cuiabá is the capital of the state of Mato Grosso and is served by daily flights from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Campo Grande (Southern Pantanal), and other Brazilian hubs.

Day 2 | Cuiabá – Aymara Lodge
After breakfast, we’ll drive to get on the Transpantaneira Park road. Since we’ll be driving along this route, there are great chances to see the Pantanal’s wildlife, such as ringed kingfisher, American wood stork, marsh deer, and more.

Aymara Lodge is home to hundreds of species of birds and mammals. Also, jaguars are spotted every year, and nests of hyacinth macaws are around and inside the forest.
Day 3 | Aymara Lodge
Aymara Lodge is a charming retreat nestled within an island forest right on the edge of the Green Channel, offering an immersive experience in the heart of the Pantanal. This peaceful haven is perfect for nature lovers and photographers alike, with exceptional opportunities to capture the region’s diverse birdlife. Hyacinth macaws nest beside the restaurant, providing a close-up view of these stunning birds, while woodcreepers, woodpeckers, parrots, and tanagers fill the surrounding forest with their vibrant colors and calls.
The lodge also offers sightings of various mammal species, including South American coatis, Azara’s agoutis, capuchin monkeys, and black-and-gold howler monkeys, often seen in the trees nearby.

Exploring the surrounding landscapes by vehicle, guests may encounter iconic wildlife such as giant anteaters, marsh deer, and even elusive tapirs, making Aymara Lodge a perfect base for those seeking to connect deeply with the Pantanal’s unique ecosystem.
Day 4 | Aymara Lodge – Porto Jofre
After breakfast, we’ll depart to Porto Jofre region (about a 3.5-hour driveh), our base for the following days. We can make a few stops along the way to photograph the variety of wildlife. Porto Jofre is the end of the Transpantaneira Park road and the edge of the Cuiabá River. This is the home of the most giant cat of the Americas, the mighty Jaguar.
Upon arrival, we’ll check in and enjoy a well-deserved lunch before heading out on our first boat safari in the afternoon. As we navigate the waterways, we’ll have our first opportunity to observe the incredible biodiversity of this ecosystem, keeping our eyes peeled for jaguars, giant river otters, and a vibrant array of birdlife.

This immersive experience is just the beginning of our unforgettable time in the Pantanal.
Days 5, 6, and 7 | Porto Jofre
Full days are dedicated to navigating through the Cuiabá River and its tributaries in search of the jaguars and the riverine fauna. Here, you will spend some time on a skiff with an experienced local naturalist guide, who will wind you through a maze of water channels, including the iconic Three Brothers, the Black Chanel, and the Caxiri.
We will be deep into jaguar territory for dependable sightings, positioning the boat for the best angle to afford fantastic viewing and photo opportunities. Although the focus of this tour is on jaguars, you will also see and photograph some rare and iconic species, such as Giant River Otter, Neotropical Otter, Tapir, Paraguayan caiman, Jabiru stork, Black-collared hawk, Great-black hawk, Yellow-Billed Tern, Black Skimmer, Cocoi heron, Great egret, Striated heron, possibly Anaconda and much more!

There is also an excellent opportunity to photograph and see the largest of the neotropical toucans, the Toco toucan, around the lodge.
Day 9 | Porto Jofre – Cuiabá
After a final breakfast, we will check out and begin our scenic drive back to Cuiabá, which will take approximately five hours. Upon arrival at Cuiabá airport, you will catch your flight for departure, taking with you unforgettable memories of the incredible wildlife and landscapes you’ve experienced in the heart of the Pantanal.
