Upon visiting the Pantanal, don’t be startled: the yellow anaconda can reach up to 4 meters in length and, despite not being a venomous snake, she is an expert in the technique of constriction, meaning she has the capacity to immobilize her prey. Her teeth are also a weapon: they are thin and backward-curved, which prevents the catch from escaping. And even though her size and strength are striking, her diet focuses on fish, birds, eggs, and small mammals.

The species is an ectothermic reptile, meaning she does not produce enough internal heat to regulate her body temperature, depending directly on external sources of heat. For this reason, she possesses both diurnal and nocturnal habits.

Her preferred habitat encompasses flooded areas, such as swamps. Thus, she shelters herself majorly close to river basins, such as that of the Paraguay River. The presence of this animal occurs in the same ecosystem inhabited by caimans, capybaras, birds, and the famous jaguar — species that comprise the complex food chain of this biome.
