Revoada dos Guarás

Every late afternoon along Brazil’s northern coast, nature puts on one of South America’s most mesmerizing spectacles. As the sun sets over the ocean, thousands of scarlet ibises (Eudocimus ruber) fill the sky. Locals call this daily event the Revoada dos Guarás.

This breathtaking phenomenon happens right in the heart of the Delta do Parnaíba. Situated between the states of Piauí and Maranhão, this vast river delta represents the only open-sea delta in the Americas. It features sprawling mangrove networks, quiet channels, and secluded coastal islands.

The Magic of the Scarlet Ibis

The guará, or scarlet ibis, is famous for its striking red plumage. Interestingly, these birds are not born red. Chicks hatch with dull grey and brown feathers. Over time, their diet transforms their appearance.

The birds feed heavily on red mangrove crabs rich in carotenoid pigments. Consequently, these natural pigments turn their feathers a brilliant, fiery red as they mature.

Throughout the day, guarás scatter across mudflats and quiet mangroves to feed. However, as twilight approaches, instinct guides them back together. Thousands of red birds gather in flight, moving in synchronized formations toward small, protected mangrove islands.

Experience the Revoada on the Route of Emotions

Witnessing the Revoada dos Guarás is a highlight of the famous Rota das Emoções, the iconic route that connects Jericoacoara, the Delta do Parnaíba, and Lençóis Maranhenses.

At South Quest, we integrate this spectacle into a tailor-made itinerary designed specifically around your travel style. As afternoon light softens, a private boat brings you through quiet channels directly to the roosting islands. Hundreds of scarlet ibises sweep across the sky, transforming green mangrove canopies into a sea of crimson dots.
