Why Start the Route of Emotions in Jericoacoara?

Jericoacoara – CE, Brasil

Jericoacoara is often described through its sunsets, beaches and freshwater lagoons. Yet its real appeal lies in the meeting of landscapes and ways of life along Ceará’s western coast. Set among dunes, coastal vegetation, mangroves and the Atlantic, the village offers a first encounter with the natural variety that defines Brazil’s Route of Emotions.

The village sits within Jericoacoara National Park, a protected coastal area shaped by wind, sand and water. Its landscape extends well beyond the shoreline. Mobile dunes shift with the wind, while seasonal lagoons form between them. Rocky outcrops, mangrove channels and beaches create habitats that change over short distances. This variety makes the region rewarding to explore slowly, rather than treating it as a single beach stop.

A Landscape Best Explored Beyond the Village

A 4×4 journey reveals how quickly the scenery changes. Around Guriú, the route crosses mangrove waterways and coastal settlements. At the river, local boatmen guide visitors through narrow channels. The area is also known for seahorse sightings, although these depend on conditions and responsible observation.

Further along the coast, Preá offers a different atmosphere. Strong and consistent winds have made it an established destination for kitesurfing. The conditions also shape daily life, from fishing activities to the rhythm of beachside businesses. Inland, lagoons such as Lagoa do Paraíso offer calmer waters and a striking contrast with the open Atlantic.

These excursions are not simply a checklist of viewpoints. They show how wind, tides and freshwater systems shape the region. They also reveal the communities whose livelihoods remain closely connected to the coast.

The Beginning of a Wider Coastal Journey

Jericoacoara works particularly well as the first stop on the Route of Emotions because it introduces the journey’s geography and travel style. From here, the route continues through Camocim and the Parnaíba Delta before reaching the dunes and lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses.

Each transition brings a distinct environment. Mangroves give way to islands and river channels in the Delta. Further west, the landscape shifts again towards the vast dune fields of Maranhão. Travelling between these places requires more than a conventional road transfer. Depending on the section, the journey combines 4×4 vehicles, boats and ferries. The logistics are part of the experience, not an interruption to it.

South Quest’s 10-day itinerary connects these landscapes with private transportation, local guides and time to experience each destination. Starting in Jericoacoara allows travellers to settle into the coast before continuing across the region.

More Than a Beach Destination

Jericoacoara deserves time beyond its famous sunset. Its value comes from the relationship between the village, the surrounding ecosystems and the wider northeastern coastline. As the opening chapter of the Route of Emotions, it sets the tone for a journey defined by changing landscapes, local encounters and travel over land and water.
