White dunes swaying in the wind, crystalline waters, and a breeze that sculpts the landscape: welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses! At Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you will find a rare equilibrium between adventure and contemplation, revealing how masterfully nature can manifest itself.

But could such beauty be considered a desert? In this article, you will discover the true essence of Lençóis Maranhenses and understand why this destination is the ideal choice for your 2026 journey.

After all, are the Lençóis Maranhenses a desert?

The landscape may evoke scenes of the Sahara Desert, but the resemblance is purely visual: the Lençóis Maranhenses are not a desert. The region is a complex of dunes and lagoons, falling outside the “desert” classification due to the substantial volume of rainfall it receives annually.

This fully protected area, spanning over 155,000 hectares, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between the rainy and dry seasons, one can admire turquoise lagoons that remain on the surface thanks to an impermeable rock formation beneath the white sand.

The geometry of the dunes is influenced by their strategic location in a transition zone between three major biomes: the Amazon, the Cerrado, and the Caatinga. This convergence ensures a biodiversity that flourishes beyond the sands, composed of restingas, mangroves, and deeply diversified flora and fauna.

With every cycle, the Lençóis Maranhenses transform. Yet, the mosaic of lagoons and the breathtaking horizon remain the eternal postcard of Maranhão.

The Dry and Wet Seasons of the Lençóis

If you wish to experience the Lençóis, know that the seasons dictate the rhythm of the experience — and every visit represents an exclusive journey. Between June and September, immediately following the rainy season, the lagoons reach their plenitude, displaying celebrated shades of turquoise among the dunes.

Even during the dry periods, the adventure does not cease. From October to December, as the landscape transforms and the lagoons recede, new perspectives emerge. The winds grow more intense and the dunes shift more rapidly, making way for adrenaline-filled 4×4 expeditions or trekking.
